SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Shell EP Pakistan (SEPP) is committed to promoting Sustainable Development (SD) at the heart of which is the simple idea of ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. Pressing societal concerns - such as increasing extremes of poverty and wealth, exponential population growth, biodiversity loss, deteriorating air and water quality and climate change – are all seen as threats to the continued quality of life.
COMMUNITY WELFARE
Shell EP Pakistan is committed to the improvement of the lives of the local communities, not just in its areas of operation but elsewhere in Pakistan also and supports community welfare programmes based on the needs and requirements of local communities.
EDUCATION
SEPP has supported the establishment and operation of girls’ schools in ten villages in the coastal area of Badin with around fifty six to twelve year old students admitted into each school from the nearby villages. SEPP financial assistance has provided reading materials, furniture, classroom materials and teachers’ training, with project supervision by the local administration SDOP also provides support to NGOs engaged in teacher training and the establishment and operation of schools in low-income areas which provide schooling to children who might not otherwise receive access to educational opportunities.
ENVIRONMENT
SEPP supports the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) which conducts nature carnivals through which environmental issues are raised and awareness promoted amongst schoolchildren - tomorrow’s leaders - through schools across Pakistan.
HEALTH
SEPP has established a four bed Cardiac Care Unit/ward (CCU) at the Badin Civil Hospital, the first such facility in the area. This included the supply of infrastructure and essential medical equipment. The facility is functioning well and receives periodic need-based additional support from SEPP.
SEPP also provides support to some of Pakistan’s most respected healthcare NGOs: the Layton Rehmatullah Benevolent Trust provides free eye care to communities across Pakistan; The Kidney Centre is one of Pakistan’s leading private institution for the treatment of renal diseases.
HERITAGE
Under an initiative sponsored by Shell Pakistan Ltd, the Shell Group oil products marketing company in Pakistan, SEPP has provided support to the restoration of the Rohtas Fort near Jehlum, an important historical site. |
